About Teaching in Thailand - Who do you want to teach?

There are many different types of English teaching:

Each has its own characteristics, advantages and disadvantages. What you need to do is consider what kind of work you want to do and then see what positions are available.

Schools

Elite has several different schools around Bangkok where we provide English teaching services to the curriculum. The biggest of these projects is the EICP (English Integrated Curriculum Project). Click here to read more about this.

A teacher in this project will teach students aged between 6 and 14 years of age. However, you would be assigned to teach a particular combination of similar age groups such as Grade 1 and 2, or 5 and 6.

Most of the classes will have between 20 and 25 students in them, and there are positions teaching at both boys and girls schools (subject to availability).

If you teach in a school you will usually teach between 18 and 22 hours per week, and have the rest of the week to prepare lessons and materials.

School starts at 8.00am with the national anthem and finishes around 3.40pm, and you will need to be at school between these times even if you have a free lesson.

Most teachers sign a contract for a complete school year or semester (depending upon the time of year). The school year starts in May and finished in late March.

Corporate Teaching

Most companies in Thailand are now expecting their employees to be able to speak, read and write English. Many multinational corporations are using Bangkok as a major branch location and require their employees to be able to use their English as a part of their everyday job.

The Corporate English teacher therefore helps Thai employees improve their English skills specifically for the workplace. The emphasis is often on target vocabulary and situations (ie meetings, introducing people, dealing with clients and describing products and services).

Corporate Teachers normally work on a contract by contract basis, each class going for between 40 and 80 hours, usually with 2 hour classes between 1 and 3 times per week. Often these classes will occur outside of office hours, either early morning or in the evening.

Classes can take place either at the Elite Office or at the companies office (more common).

Private Tutoring (Inside Classes)

Elite offers a private tutoring program that is specifically targeted at school children who wish to advance their English studies. The Young Learners program aims to develop students skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening in a fun, relaxed and stimulating environment.

Classes are usually one on one or small classes of under 8 students. The focus here is on individual attention, perfecting pronounciation and grammar and correcting errors.

Classes are most often on the weekends and after school, and last for between 1 and 3 hours.

At the end of a course the student will take the Cambridge University Young Learners Examination, which tests their proficiency in all the skills.

English Camps

English camps can either be an inside camp (usually located in a school around Bangkok or at Elite's office) or outside at a hotel resort usually outside of Bangkok.

Teachers at outside camps are working as both English teachers and as Camp Leaders, taking English lessons in the morning, and then leading the activites such as tennis, swimming or other activities and tours around the area the camp is located.

Teachers are employed on a camp by camp basis.

Class sizes are variable, activities are fun, dynamic and creative and the focus is on learning in a stimulating environment. Each camp theme is different and leads to a unique experience for both the teachers and the students.
